How walkability is measured
The EPA’s National Walkability Index rates every neighborhood from 1 to 20 using four things that make walking practical: how many intersections there are (connected streets), how close the nearest transit stop is, and how well homes, shops and jobs are mixed together. The EPA groups scores as least walkable (up to 5.75), below average (to 10.5), above average (to 15.25) and most walkable (above 15.25).
We combine the neighborhood scores into each ZIP code, weighted by where people live, and leave out ZIP codes with fewer than 1,000 residents. Downtown business districts can score lower than nearby residential neighborhoods because the index rewards a mix of homes and jobs, not just density.
Questions
What is the most walkable ZIP code in America?
Charleston, SC (29424), with a score of 19.0 out of 20 on the EPA National Walkability Index, among ZIP codes with at least 1,000 residents.
What makes a ZIP code walkable?
Connected streets with many intersections, a transit stop within a short walk, and homes mixed with shops and jobs. Places that score highly usually let you run daily errands without a car.
Is this the same as Walk Score?
No. Walk Score is a private company’s rating. This uses the EPA’s free National Walkability Index, which measures similar things in a different way, so the numbers aren’t interchangeable.
