How we rank

Price-to-income compares the median home value with the median household income in each ZIP code. A ratio of 3 means the typical home costs three years of the typical household’s income; many lenders and economists treat about 3 or less as affordable. A low ratio can mean homes are a bargain for local incomes, but it can also reflect older housing or a slower local economy, so check each town’s market page.

Both figures come from the U.S. Census Bureau’s five-year American Community Survey. We leave out ZIP codes with fewer than 5,000 residents, and those where either figure is capped by the Census.
