How we rank
The median year built is the year by which half of the homes in a ZIP code had been built, from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey. Newer homes usually mean newer roofs, windows, wiring and heating systems, more energy efficiency and fewer surprises at inspection. They also tend to mean newer subdivisions, sometimes with homeowners association fees and longer commutes.
